Thornewood Castle Wedding
Set along the shores of American Lake in Lakewood, Washington, Thornewood Castle feels distinctly different from most Pacific Northwest wedding venues. Its Tudor Gothic architecture, dark wood interiors, historic windows, formal gardens, fountains, and quiet corners create layers of completely different settings within one property.
For this wedding, soft pastel tones and romantic florals contrasted beautifully with the deeper colors and old-world character of the castle. The day moved naturally from quiet getting-ready moments indoors to an outdoor ceremony in the garden, followed by portraits throughout the grounds as the light softened later in the day.
Rather than treating every part of the wedding as a separate photo session, I photographed the day as it unfolded, stepping in with direction when it was helpful and leaving space for the unscripted moments in between.
Getting Ready Inside Thornewood Castle
One of the most interesting things about photographing inside Thornewood Castle is the change in atmosphere from room to room. Soft window light in the getting-ready spaces creates clean, delicate portraits, while the darker wood-paneled interiors feel richer and more dramatic.
We used both. The quieter bridal preparations were photographed near the windows, then the historic architecture of the castle became part of the portraits once the bride was dressed.
A Historic Wedding Venue in Lakewood, Washington
Thornewood Castle was built in the early twentieth century for Chester and Anna Thorne, incorporating architectural elements brought from a centuries-old English manor. Today, the estate combines Tudor Gothic architecture with formal gardens and views of American Lake, giving couples both indoor and outdoor settings without having to leave the property.
From a photography perspective, that variety is what makes the venue especially interesting. Within a short walk, photographs can move from bright garden scenes to brick architecture, old stonework, dark interiors, and open lawn.
Garden Ceremony at Thornewood Castle
The ceremony took place in the Sunken English Garden, surrounded by greenery, stone details, flowers, and the formal structure of the estate. The garden already has a strong sense of symmetry, so it works beautifully for both wide photographs that show the setting and closer images focused entirely on the people.
I kept the ceremony coverage largely documentary, moving between wider views and smaller reactions without interrupting what was happening.
Pastel Garden Wedding Details
The wedding design brought together soft pastel tones, including lavender, blush, dusty blue, ivory, and soft pink. Paired with romantic florals and the greenery of the estate, the palette felt elegant and light without competing with the historic setting.
Wedding Portraits Around the Estate
For portraits, we moved through several areas of the property instead of staying in one location. The gardens gave us softer, more romantic images, while the brick exterior and architecture of the castle created a stronger editorial backdrop.
I like to give couples enough direction that they never have to wonder what to do in front of the camera, but I don’t want every photograph to feel perfectly arranged. We mixed more composed portraits with movement, walking, and quieter in-between moments that felt less posed.
That balance is what I want a wedding gallery to feel like: considered, but never over-directed.
Planning a Thornewood Castle Wedding?
Thornewood Castle offers an unusual combination of historic interiors, formal gardens, old-world architecture, and waterfront surroundings, all within one private estate in Lakewood, Washington. For couples planning a wedding here, the variety of spaces allows the day to unfold naturally without needing to leave the property for portraits.
If you’re planning a wedding at Thornewood Castle and are looking for photography that combines natural documentation with thoughtful editorial direction, I’d love to hear what you’re planning.
